Nintendo has revealed that Virtual Console downloads have already reached more than 3.3 million.
Speaking at a Tokyo press conference last week, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced that the Wii Virtual Console has been a great success. The Virtual Console channel has seen more than 3.3 million downloads since the launch of the Wii.
The most recent figures from Microsoft put Xbox Live Arcade downloads at 25 million, although it's difficult to directly compare to the Virtual Console - there are no free downloads on the Virtual Console and we don't know how many of the 25 million Xbox Live Arcade downloads have been converted into purchases.

Moreover, probably the coolest part of the site is that it offers content downloads in a way that systematically bypasses any of the usual shared network security features whereby ones P2P and file-sharing activity is closely monitored for illegal activity if not outright throttled or blocked.

More unrestricted, higher-quality music and music videos are on the way to the iTunes Store . Apple has told publishers of music and music videos currently available on iTunes that they will soon get the opportunity to sell their works without digital rights management (DRM) protection.
"Many of you have reached out to iTunes to find out how you can make your songs available higher-quality and DRM-free," Apple said in an email sent to its iTunes partners. "Starting next month, iTunes will begin offering higher-quality, DRM-free music and DRM-free music videos to all customers."
DRM-free music
The email implies that any publisher can sell DRM-free music and music videos on the iTunes Store. Apple's statement is timely as DRM is becoming more of an issue for the music industry.The music industry looks certain "to cave in the next six months" on the issue of DRM, according to Ty Roberts, CEO of CD database Gracenote . However he believes that the removal of DRM will only apply to downloads - not physical media such as CDs.
He also told ArsTechnica that the removal of DRM wasn't good for the industry in the long term as its removal would serve to lower the perceived value of media content.
Apple/EMI deal
EMI said it was going to begin selling DRM-free downloads at a joint press conference with Apple at the beginning of April. Tracks will be available on the iTunes Store as 256kbps AAC downloads. To legitimise songs being exchanged for free online Intent MediaWorks figured a way to embed pop-ups in music and video files unobtrusively. So next time you download a song from a peer-to-peer file-sharing service like LimeWire you will be asked to look at an ad, either text or video, in return for a free and legal copy of the music.
The company claims that 60% of users are willing to endure the resulting pop-up ads. Avril Lavigne's publisher uses a service that lets fans download her songs for free in exchange for watching an ad.
"Consumers don't want to rip people off", says Les Ottolenghi, president and co-founder of Atlanta-based Intent. "They just want to get music as easily as possible."
Intent is seeding the peer-to-peer networks at a rapid clip. In February its digital media files were downloaded 1.7 million times.
This comes as research found that over one in three (34%) consumers do not trust entertainment companies to respect the rights of people who pay for entertainment through digital channel
